The Joy of Useless Facts: Why Wonder Is Never a Waste of Time

What’s a completely useless fact you love sharing?

You got me there, WordPress.

I usually have a funky, sometimes funny quip for most questions. This one though…made me go tongue-tied.

I am not one for sharing myself.

Unless it’s a complete stranger who I can get away easily with by being very sweet and casual. Something completely boring and banal about the weather or something spicy about politics ALWAYS has the much needed effect I am going for.

Is it really a fact? Who cares? When was the last time weather and politics stuck to the facts anyway?

IF not a stranger, then it better be someone I know personally well and feel emotionally safe around.

Even then I neither have the intention nor the inclination to share stuff they can google themselves.

Do I consider myself too useful to collect useless facts?

Maybe.

Every fact I come across—I call it useful. It’s there for a reason, no? It’s ok if I don’t understand its earth-shattering meaning.

Do I listen to these so-called useless facts and roll my eyes in wonder?

SURE! Why not?

For a few seconds, it helps me get out of my mind and life and express amazement at something that may never mean anything to anyone.

So what?

At least for those few seconds, I experienced the joy of wonder, the joy of expressing an emotion that’s going extinct.

What’s so wrong about that?

The point isn’t, is it useful or useless on its own merit? Who decides that anyway?

The point is, did I find it useful?

More often than not, I do.

If nothing, it helps me stop, stare and wonder.

Sometimes revel in joy. Or shake my head in shock and awe. Sometimes marvel at the oh-my-god-I-can’t-make-heads-or-tails-of-this moment.

That’s useful enough to me.

Call me weird, mad or insane. I shall take them all as a compliment.

Thank you for stopping by for what might have seemed like a complete waste of time to you.

Just know that it wasn’t to me darling.

  2. This is such a refreshing and beautifully honest read! I love how you capture that wonderful human impulse to just stop, stare, and wonder at the world without needing everything to have some earth-shattering, hyper-useful purpose. Whether weather, politics, or those wonderfully quirky ‘useless facts,’ there is so much joy in simply embracing the moments that leave us tongue-tied, amused, or shaking our heads in awe. It is definitely never a waste of time to slow down and view life through your lens. Thank you for sharing such a brilliant and engaging piece—please keep writing these wonderful musings.
