Midlife Shift: Letting Go of ‘Nothing Is Impossible’ and Learning to Be Like Water

Daily writing prompt
If you had to sum up your life philosophy in one sentence, what would it be?

My Core Philosophy has always been NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE, I AM POSSIBLE.

This meant I learned to be resilient, cultivated self-belief and continuously worked on myself instead of complaining about my limits.

It also meant I have been standing up for myself and fighting battles forever.

It worked like a charm all my life.

Then I hit 40.

Perimenopause welcomed itself like an uninvited guest and stayed on like that aunt who refuses to leave your room. Yes! The one who doesn’t quite grasp the concept of privacy and consent.

Everything in my body is changing, transforming itself to welcome the next phase of life’s offerings.

I fought it at first, like I always have. Until I was too exhausted to live life the way I enjoy living.

Now I am ready to lay down my arms and let life carry me with her wherever she wants to. I am willing to be present to her surprises with curiosity.

I forfeit the obsessive need to control my life, my body and my mind. Learning to be like water, that is soft and yielding yet holds the strength to overcome the hardest of substances.

I won’t fight the river of life anymore. I will flow around obstacles and align with whatever is right for my highest good at any given moment.

As Bruce Lee puts it so succinctly.

“Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water. You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”

Now is a good time to shift gears from GO! GO! GO LULU! to Slow…Slow…Slow Lulu.

I would officially like to adopt the Taoist concept, Be Like Water as my core philosophy from today.

My meditation app Insight Timer opens to a page with my intention for the year 2026: In 2026 I will soften expectations.

It laid the foundation for me to stop expecting me to do everything and be everything, everywhere all at once. I have finally learned that not everything that needs doing in the world needs to be done by me (READ THAT AGAIN LULU).

I don’t have to be possible all the bloody time. Certain things in life can be impossible and out of my reach.

And that is okay.

  1. Lalitha, Interesting how your old motto has not disappeared; it has simply learned to make room for a different kind of strength. Perhaps knowing when not to push ourselves is also a form of self-belief. Even the most determined among us need to remember that we are human, not machines built to meet every deadline life throws at us!

    1. What a beautiful way to put it! I was convinced I was an Amazonian. When the chinks in my armour appeared I blissfully ignored them. What a fool,I was! Until one fine day, it became quite clear I was but human. And thank God for that!

      P. S. Welcome to my blog! You finally made it here! I remember you from Rajeev’s blog. I loved your banter with him there. And ofcourse your legendary quips with Savio.

  2. Lulu, this is such a beautifully honest and grounding read.
I love how you’ve framed this shift from ‘fighting every battle’ to embracing the concept of being like water. That reminder that ‘not everything that needs doing in the world needs to be done by me’ is something we all need tattooed on our mirrors.
Thank you for sharing such vulnerability and wisdom—wishing you a wonderfully gentle, flowing, and peaceful 2026.
