Longing: A tale of a cozy room in Nairobi

How is she?

Still naive?

Still innocent?

Still wearing rose tinted glasses?

Yeah. She was always like that.

One with a big forgiving heart like a rain-fed field that only knew to see the good in others.

*

How is she?

Still watching him?

Still loving him?

Still abandoning herself?

Yeah. She was always like that.

One with a big guileless heart like a light-fed forest that only knew how to give.

**

How is she?

Still singing for you?

Still caressing your cheeks?

Still hoping you could be her’s?

Yeah. She was always like that.

One with a big bountiful heart like a magic-fed dream that only knew how to conjure miracles.

***

Well, I ain’t her.

Left her that noon in your arms.

Never knowing I would never get to meet her again.

Or you.

How are you, my love?

Still cream with a patch of pink and blue?

Still open and benevolent like you once were?

Still hoping for one last glance from me?

Yeah. You were always like that I suppose.

One with a big motherly heart like a trust-fed sky welcoming strangers into your bosom as if they were your own.

Behind the scenes:

Written for the #WDYS Prompt Challenge by Sadje.

This picture reminded me of a cozy room I lived in for four months of my life, somewhere under the big beautiful sky of Nairobi, Kenya.

Painted in a warm creamy tone with flashes of pink and blue lines snaking up the walls. With a bedspread like the sky awash with cornflowers and pastel pink peonies. A blue door with checkered glass panes. Biscuit brown curtains that smelled of home and sunshine. A sofa that could only be compared to soft clouds of the spring time.

A man who looked a lot like chocolate chip ice-cream with roasted, salted and glazed hazelnuts hiding and surprising us when we least expect it to.

And the woman I once was while I was sharing myself with him, the room and the skies of Kenya. Who dreamed a dozen dreams with him every single day. Of life under the African sun. Of immeasurable happiness under the welcoming arms of a new world conjured only in dreams.

The poem is a conversation with the beautiful room I once loved and lived in. Enquiring about the whereabouts of a version I left far behind…who is probably still pouring into a love that is long gone. Her naivete, I don’t miss! Innocence though…that is surely a trait I wish I hadn’t foregone. Alas…

The cozy room I still miss. Where sleep came with ease and laughter filled the days as much as tears at night.

A room that enveloped me as her own child and left behind a memory that promises never to fade.

A room where I left behind a version of me that was a lot like a child; believing and trusting that love will conquer everything — minds, hearts, fears, doubts, borders and distance.

A room with the sad tale of an improbable love story that failed to find its destiny.

A room that has welcomed many like me into it’s fold yet hopefully remembers me best as the naive one who never tired of giving.

P.S. Thank you Sadje for the prompt and the picture. That was a remembrance of a memory well cherished in my memory palace!

  1. This one quietly broke my heart Lalitha. 🤍 There’s something so beautiful about the way you’ve written “How is she?” again and again, almost like someone is checking on a version of themselves they can no longer reach.

And that shift at “Well, I ain’t her.” oof. That line changes everything. It feels like grief, growth, and acceptance arriving in the same breath. She wasn’t necessarily foolish for being forgiving, loving, hopeful, or giving… she was simply someone who loved without keeping score. And sometimes life teaches us that lesson rather painfully.

I also loved the imagery rain-fed field, light-fed forest, magic-fed dream, trust-fed sky. 🌧️🌳✨ Each one carries a different kind of tenderness and makes the heart feel almost tangible.

And then that last question “How are you, my love?” suddenly makes the whole piece feel even more intimate and bittersweet.

Beautifully written, Lalitha🤍. Soft on the surface, but there’s a whole storm underneath it. 🦋✨

    1. “… she was simply someone who loved without keeping score.”

THIS is my takeaway from this comment which feels so so therapeutic Rajeshwariji🫠🥹.I sometimes look back at my past selves and wonder how they are faring. I know they don’t exist anymore technically. But I am someone who leaves behind a big chunk of me in every relationship that has faded with time. So yeah… I do wonder how those parts are doing… Your words gives me confidence that I wasn’t wrong in being who I was.

Yes! You witnessed the storm beyond the surface as I knew you would! Thank you for this wonderful piece of yourself that encourages me and leaves me with so much hope!

  2. What a very poignant poem, Lalitha! 👍 I like the repetition of “How is she” that was so heartbreaking.

    1. Thank you Aptivi🙏🏾How very kind of you 🥹 I guess the repetition signifies how some memories fade over time leaving behind a sadness that refuses to fade. Our past needs kindness… that is another thing I was trying to aim at with the repetition.

      1. You’re most welcome, Lalitha! 🙏 You’re right, some memories fade over time, but sadness doesn’t, so our past, indeed, needs some kindness. This repetition captured those beautifully! 👍☺️

      2. Thank you 🥹

      3. You’re welcome ☺️

  3. Such a warm and inviting piece! You captured the comfort and peaceful feeling of a cozy room beautifully. ❤️

    1. Thank you 😊🙏🏾 You saw past the lingering grief and sadness feeling the comfort and peace beyond them! That’s so comforting by itself! Thank you! 🥹🙏🏾
