The Honour to Witness the First Clear NO

Crowd holding hands beneath bright concert lights at ancient ruins
Daily writing prompt
If you could go back and witness any historical event, which one would you pick?

If I could go back and witness any historical event, it would be that shining moment that defined an individual’s freewill to express his/her/their right to freedom.

I want to go back to that human who stood up courageously for themselves, for their family, for their tribe/ community, for their home, for their village and said in a clear distinctly defiant voice : NO.

Irrespective of fear of threat of death, of being chained and dragged to become a slave in some godforsaken land far, far away from all that they knew or perhaps being enslaved by their own uncle or tribal chieftain or you-fill-in-the-blank-yourself.

A NO that probably led to them being butchered, their family massacred and their whole tribal hamlet being razed to the ground.

Nevertheless the bravery of that one human and that one clear NO reverberated throughout the world and led to countless movements towards seeking independence and liberty. Towards the expression of the basic human right to be free.

I would want to be present to that tiny moment that might not have changed history or made it into the history books but definitely honoured the infinite potential of a human. Especially when they have all the odds stacked against them.

I want to bear witness to that defining moment where one human held their nerve with immense fortitude that showed they cared for themselves. To what they knew was right. Proving to the rest of humanity that even in the worst depravity we face, we still have the choice to say NO.

NO to being taken for granted, for being abused, discriminated, manipulated, bullied, victimized, tormented, singled out, hurt.

NO to being prejudiced, ill-treated, enslaved.

No to being treated as a lesser human with lesser rights thence lesser freedom to choose their own freedom.

Many iconic names are remembered for standing up for human rights; be it Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Gandhi or Abraham Lincoln. But that singular voice of refusal, in valiant resistance to injustice, that first stood up for themselves, heralding change for humanity as a whole with a war cry as simple as NO is lost to us…a name that stayed out of history books. Fading from memory. Fading into time itself.

I want to remember that lone human for their grit and witness their heroism shown at a time when you and I would probably have wet our pants and resigned ourselves to our fate. Cursing our ancestors and God and Godonlyknows who else, kicking our way to a life led in penury and absolute destitution.

A single NO signalling freedom : seen here a Crowd, chained into slavery beneath ancient ruins with one child raising his hand in defiance
The moment that quietly changed how humanity perceived freedom, stayed out of history books and out of our memories too.

  1. Today’s prompt seriously felt so tough to me. I don’t even know how many answers I wrote and then deleted because I just wasn’t satisfied with any of them. 😄 But you’ve expressed this so beautifully. I really loved the way you thought about that one forgotten “NO” and the courage behind it. Thank you so much Lalitha for making me look at the prompt a little differently. 🦋❤️
