A Leaf’s Legacy

Forest trail covered with fallen autumn leaves and a rainbow overhead

Thin splindly veins,
Zigzag through your mein,
Spinning gossamer lines,
Of historic reign and mysterious rain.

An epic poem here,
A heartbreaking legend there,
Reams of realms from everywhere,
Etched by the divine on your ware.

Swaying with the wind,
Playing with your kind,
Loving with no bind,
Dying, never looking behind.

My precious beloved leaf,
What splendour you are, my nymph,
An abode of hardship and grief,
A prayer of hope and triumph.

A 74 word poem written for Sammicox’s weekend word prompt challenge.

Behind the scenes:

An ode to one of my favorite things on earth.

I have utmost fascination for leaves.

I admire them, collect them, hide them in journals and keep them in beautiful placeholders around me.

Honouring my love for them; their resilience and tenacity a quiet motivation.

I salute their grace even in death. Swaying and falling to the ground in modest acceptance, as if quenching earth’s pining for it with a soft gentle goodbye kiss.

They are a lesson in creating without seeking. Spreading cheer with their playful dances in the wind. Caressing the air with their stories, legends and poems written by the divine on their skin.

While the flowers take centre stage, the leaves stay behind, loving the elements without clamour. A personification of a hard life. A picture of unnamed grief.

Nature’s little soldiers bring hope to the weary and triumph to the seeker. A glorious prayer to commune with the divine.

Us mortals seldom notice them crushing them as we walk our paths to glory. Them immortals smile and lose themselves completely to that which created them. Becoming one with One that will create them again.

It all starts with a tiny leaf opening itself boldly to the creator.

Born into the circle of life.

Leaving behind a circle of legacy.

A legacy of a life spent in creation.

An eternal circle of legacy creating legacy.

Leaf skeleton with rainbow light across its veins on a wooden surface
What is a leaf? A circle of legacy creating legacy.

  1. i so love your poem… in the fall i love to go for walks and pick leaves from the ground and place them in books…. late summer when the leaves start to fall… i’ll sit in front of the window and watch the leaves from from the trees in one day…. they’ll just start falling one right after the other until there’s hardly any leaf left on the tree… i use to pass by an old oak whose leaves would turn gold in late summer… i would specifically go that way to pass by this huge old ancient oak tree every year … you are so right in that everyone notices the flower and not the leaf… i love the way the leaves crunch under your feet turned brown just before the snow starts… then they become moist then wet and start to break down… i so enjoyed coming by from Sammi Cox writing prompt and finding your tale of the leaf… have a great week

    1. Oh you are making me wish I could walk with you… India doesn’t have an Autumn. So I miss out on the leaves turning gold moments and yeah, no snow either 🤒. Thank you so much for sharing these memories with me. They are precious💕
