Bagging Planets : Human lust for more

Daily writing prompt
Do you think humans will ever colonize Mars? What would life there actually look like?

My answer is in the question.

I don’t like the tone of this. Colonize, really? Where are your manners? Oh! Forget I asked. I keep sliding back to my default mode of posing questions, completely oblivious to the fact that us, humans lack the code for civic sense or any sense for that matter. Invasive that we basically are.

I belong to a country that was colonized, brutalized and stripped of all its riches, not to mention identity. I still reek of British prudishness and so you bloody well believe me! My country might proclaim it isn’t suffering the consequences, but who is it trying to fool?

Not me.

My answer is a big sad bleeding Yes.

In that humans could and would in all likelihood colonize (your word, not mine) another planet. Maybe Mars first since the poor sod has been in the range of our seven sins since a while now.

My big fat fervent HOPE though is NO.

I hope humans never ever claim any other planet or star as theirs and land there, create a colony and start breeding like rabbits. We did that to Earth and we all are witnesses and participants in the mass scale rape and annihilation of the planet that has followed.

We are responsible for a planet that was life giving once to have become a place that isn’t safe anymore. Shameless that we are, we have the audacity to lay the blame squarely on the planet and squeeze our unapologetic butts out of any criticism.

We are a bottomless blackhole of a race. Deceitful, crafty, dishonest and spineless creatures. We singlehandedly managed to wipe out scores of other species that call Earth home and are as such our siblings( but did that ever stop us from committing murder for pleasure?) thus leaving the doors to armageddon/mass extinction wide open.

We are also the same bumbling idiots that have elected to seat in places of power, such fine humans who are blinded by their own blondness to claim the non-existentence of any devastation to Earth, not in the least climate change. Meanwhile us, poor darlings are being eradicated by the dozens by an extended summer that has only exceeded its welcome by a mere miniscule number of days.

Oh yeah, you are right! Earth is to blame, I forgot! Silly me.

We humans believe ourselves to be angelic, scrubbed and wiped clean of all crime because we pay obeisance to borders of all kinds: colours, nations, religions, tribes, castes and cultures that teach us all the same thing to pray for.

More.

What else do we do with our time anyway… scouring the Earth endlessly for one knick knack or the other to shine our skins or shine on our mantel pieces. We just want more of everything. Having guzzled everything that was on Earth, reaching our untouched-by-sin tentacles into the Universe now.

For more. Ever so more.

The greed never stops. The gluttony never ends. The lust rages on…

What will we do on Mars or for that matter on any other planet? What we know and what we always have.

Divide. Conquer. Rule. Annihilate.

Rinse. Repeat.

Destroy. Destroy. Destroy.

Mercilessly.

Remorselessly.

That has been the anthem of humankind throughout its infamous history. What’s gonna be new on Mars?

We would. I know we would claim Mars to be ours and start working on our agenda to terminate… Sooner than later.

Not satisfied, are we? With the large scale mass warfare here on Earth that is taking out all things we once considered sacred. We want to take the fight to another planet now. And then another. Until nothing remains to be conquered. Killed. Maimed. Sucked dry. Bone dry.

I won’t commit the novice mistake of asking, when will it end? Because it won’t. Not until our race ends. We humans end. Period.

So I hope and I pray that Mars puts us in place quickly and ends our race to bagging planets and spreading our suicidal spawn every-effing-where on the Universe.

As it should. Sooner than later.

Amen to that. Carpediem!

By all means, go ahead kiddo!

Leave me out of it, will you? I will take my chances, breathe the venom we have spread around and die a slow poisoned death on Earth. I love her far too much to abandon her.

Now, if you think I am some puny insurgent working against humanity’s progress, go ahead, kill me for being so outspoken. Do I look like I care, dude?

It’s not like you know where I live. But then it’s not so hard to track me down either. Technologically developed enough to stike out anyone or anything that stands in our way to lusting through all that exists, aren’t we?

Go for it! I am willing to sacrifice myself for a planet I dearly love. Gimme a quick death, so I can be born again into a warrior clan either on Mars or any other planet, who works to keep the Universe safe from the spread of a vermin that refuses to die a quick death, humans.

May the Force be with me.

Beware! Beware!

For when the stars and the planets get down to wage their wars on you, God save you!

Or not!

  1. What a fiercely honest and unapologetic piece of writing, Lalitha ✨. I may not agree with every conclusion, but I deeply appreciate the passion behind it. Beneath the anger, sarcasm, and frustration lies a profound love for Earth and a heartfelt grief for all that humanity has damaged in its endless pursuit of “more.” The imagery is powerful, the voice unmistakable, and the message impossible to ignore. This isn’t just a reflection on Mars it’s a mirror held up to humanity itself. A thought-provoking and memorable read.✨🤍

    1. Thank you Rajeshwari. That one word “Colonize” really got to me! If only it had been inhabit or some other softer word… I would still have been scatching but on a whole other tangent!

I am not against exploration but what end is this billion dollar industry trying to achieve? It’s pure escapism, no? To turn our home into a garbage dump, look over the neighbour’s with a spic and span one with a garden et all and simply jump ship. Who’s going to clean up our mess then? And what of the trail of destruction we will leave Mars behind with? What are the odds we will behave differently in Mars?

    2. Thank you for going beyond the words. I am happy you didn’t take offence! Happier that you felt the deep grief beyond the anger and the sarcasm that I feel when I see a bit more of Earth dying everyday.

Care to drop a tiny pearl from the ocean of your mind?
